LANGUAGE OPPORTUNITIES

Foreign Language Career Opportunities with the NYPD

If you have foreign language skills and are able to speak, read or write a foreign language, you may be able to put your abilities to good use as an NYPD Police Officer. Diverse linguistic skills are assets to the Department, especially in domestic security and community interaction. Foreign language skills could enable you to be considered for appointments to special assignments such as intelligence projects, detective work, and community relations.

The NYPD currently utilizes hundreds of Police Officers as Certified Linguist to help with translations and interpretations in over 60 languages. As we look to build upon these language skills we seek bilingual individuals who can speak, read or write in English and a foreign language. If you have these skills we invite you to consider a career with the NYPD.

Selective Certification for Foreign Language
If you possess the ability to speak one or more foreign language, you may be considered for appointment to positions requiring this ability through a process called Selective Certification. In particular, we're looking for applicants who have skills in any of these languages:

  • Balochi
  • Cambodian
  • Chechen
  • Czech
  • Indonesian
  • Kurdish
  • Laotian
  • Lithuanian

  • Norwegian
  • Somali
  • Swahili
  • Swedish
  • Tamil
  • Twi
  • Wolof

If you qualify for Selective Certification with skills in one of the above languages and you pass a qualifying test, you may be given preferred consideration for positions requiring this ability. Please fill out the survey if you wish to be contacted by a Police Recruiter regarding taking the Police Officer Entrance Exam which is the first step towards your Foreign Language Career Opportunities with the NYPD.

SPECIAL NOTE: Please read the age requirements to take the Police Officer Entrance Exam before completing this survey. If you are not within the age requirements to take the Police Officer Exam, do not complete this survey but please visit our Civilian Opportunities: http://www.nypdrecruit.com/NYPD_civilians.aspx with the NYPD.
