Qualifications

AGE
Be no younger than 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
EDUCATION
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; and
- Two years of full-time, satisfactory experience in the areas of security, law enforcement and/or active military duty; or,
- Successful completion of 60 college semester credits at an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 cumulative index grade point average.
RESIDENCY
Be a resident of New York City (5 Boroughs), unless exempted by law. After two years of city service you are allowed to live in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange Counties in addition to the five boroughs.
INVESTIGATION
After an interview, if you are selected, you are required to undergo and successfully pass the following:
- Background Check, which will require a $75 money order for the fingerprinting fee.
- Medical, Drug Test, and Psychological evaluation. The investigation can take up to 6 weeks.
CITIZENSHIP
According to the New York State Public Officers Law, Section 3, United States citizenship is required at the time of appointment.
PROBATION PERIOD
If hired from a civil service list, this title has a one-year probationary period to become permanent in the title. You will receive training and must successfully complete the training course as part of your probationary period. You are evaluated on the 4th and 10th month of your first year.
WORK HOURS AND LOCATION
The NYPD operates 24/7. Your assigned location, work hours and days off will be determined based on the needs of the Department. Must be comfortable working with uniform personnel who carry firearms.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT
Prior to your hire date, you must have a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver license. Employees must maintain the license for the duration of their employment in this title. If you have moving violations, license suspensions(s), or an accident record, you may be disqualified.
